Childhood is not a race to see how quickly a child can read, write, and count. Childhood is a small window of time to learn and develop at the pace which is right for each individual child

Preschool: Monday - Friday - for children at least 3 1/2 yrs old by Sept. 1 of enrollment year

Children are naturally motivated to play. Our play-based program builds on this motivation, using play as a context for learning. Our day often starts on our playground which is designed to stimulate the imagination and to develop coordination, balance, and stamina. Studies show that children who spend time outside are healthier, happier, and maybe even smarter.

After playing outside, children come inside for Morning Meeting. Our Morning Meeting is a daily ritual that gives children a sense of belonging.  We learn how to share our ideas and feelings, listen to others with respect, tell stories, and connect the messages in those stories to our own lives.

We then move into centers-based play where children have the choice to play in a variety of  intentionally-planned cooperative spaces such sensory room (sand and water), blocks, housekeeping, reading and listening centers, science center, quiet corner, or games and puzzles. Teachers take an active role in guiding children’s interactions in the play. Children are supported in developing social skills such as cooperation, sharing and responding to ideas, negotiating, and resolving conflicts. Our teachers also use children’s motivations and interests to explore concepts and ideas. In this way, children acquire and practice important academic skills and learning in a playful context.

Art and music are a critical component of our day and the integration of these into our program sets Weekday Nursery apart from other programs. Our art program is based on the Reggio Emilia approach. This is a child-centered, process-driven approach where children have many opportunities to express themselves through a variety of materials: collage, chalk, clay, sand, finger paint, stamping, painting, drawing, and mosaic.

Our music program is based on Music Together, an internationally-based early childhood music program based on Four Basic Principles:

  • All children are musical.

  • All children can achieve basic music competence – the ability to sing in tune and move with accurate rhythm.

  • The participation and modeling of parents and caregivers – regardless of their musical ability – are essential to a child’s musical growth.

  • Young children’s musical growth occurs best in a playful, musically rich, and developmentally appropriate setting

The five day class is for children who are 3 1/2 to 5 years old and fully potty-trained. Children can stay until 12:15 pm or 2:45 pm. Children who stay until 2:45 pm benefit from a structured afternoon of lunch, rest and outside play - furthering the important life skills of table manners, self-care, independence, and being able to fully quiet body and mind without the distraction and dependence upon TV and electronic media.
